How to Keep RV Fridge Cool On The Road.

Life on the road requires you to make some trade-offs. You’ll have to forgo your hot tub or your luxurious kitchen when living in an RV. However, some can’t be left behind.

For many camping enthusiasts, a fridge form one of those necessities. It’s no doubt one can live off non-perishable food but if meat, fresh produce, cold beverages, and dairy products form part of your menu, you simply can’t enjoy the adventures without a properly working refrigerator.

Running an RV fridge while stationary poses no problem. However, when it’s time to head off to your next destination, it can be a little tricky because a fridge uses a lot of power and sometimes it can be dangerous running your fridge while in motion.

So, how are you supposed to do when you have eight hours of drive and still want to keep your food cold? Let’s take a look.

Keep The Fridge At Its Coldest Hours Before Travel.

If you are planning to travel while you’ve switched off your fridge, ensure to keep it at its coldest temperatures hours before you hit the road. The temperature in the fridge will remain the same for most of the time.

Different food products behave differently but most will stay good for up to ten hours even when the fridge switched off. This gives you a whopping 10 hours of stress-free driving. However, this trick is successful when done on day one.

Keep The Fridge’s Door Closed.

When you set up the coldness in your RV refrigerator, the temperature will drop until it reaches a balanced or the desired temperature. When you open the door to grab a drink or something to eat, you lose some coldness.

It takes longer to get to the preset temperature consuming a lot of energy. The more you open the door, the warmer it will be.

However, this doesn’t imply you should starve yourself while on an RV. Be strategic and advice fellow crew to do the same. This way, you’ll open the door when needed.

A Generator.

It’s possible to hook up your fridge to a generator and power it up. To do this, make semi-frequent stops, hook up the connection and run the generator for a while. This gets a warm fridge to its coldest state within minutes.

To make sure you don’t annoy other people, park away from residential areas because generators produce fumes and are quite noisy. Additionally, never run a generator inside your RV, place it a few feet away to ensure the fumes safely filter into the air and not your car.

Introduce Ice Bags And Cubes.

If you have space left inside the fridge, place a few bags of ice. This will help keep the inside temperature well within limits. Ensure the ice is in a nice container to avoid dripping water.

Additionally, you can freeze foods that don’t get affected by deep-freezing before the journey. This will help them stay cold for longer drawing less energy from your RV refrigerator. This actually works better than using ice bags or cubes.

BOTTOM LINE.

It’s quite practical to avoid running your fridge and still keep your food safe while driving. The tricks are simple and make a lot of difference in real-life situations.
